Maxwell Newton, publisher, journalist, controversialist, founding editor of The Australian and the editor of The Australian Financial Review when it began publishing daily 27 years ago, died this week in Florida.

Few men can claim to have been in at the birth of both of Australia’s national daily newspapers, fewer to lay claim to such a lively, contentious and diverse life.
