Profit margins at Woolworths could be pushed lower as the country’s largest supermarket retailer lowers prices to catch its smaller rival, Coles.

For the first time in years, Coles is outperforming Woolworths on sales and market share growth, although the rise in its food division profits still lags that of its larger rival.
