A first governor-general from the business world
Sam Mostyn’s instinctive promotion of progressive cultural policies will now be cloaked in a vice regal role that should remain above politics and controversy.
Multiple judges, politicians, military officers, British aristocrats and even the odd clergyman have been made governor-general: the King’s representative in Australia, the nation’s constitutional head of state and the commander-in-chief of the Australian defence forces.
But, when she succeeds former defence force chief David Hurley in July, Sam Mostyn will become the first governor-general with significant business experience under her belt.
