When Vaughan Shanks saw that hackers using what appeared to be LockBit software had brought down 40 per cent of Australia’s port capacity in November last year, he thought: “They’ve gone a step too far”.

Mr Shanks, the founder of hack response software company Cydarm, told The Australian Financial Review at the time that the breach was so severe law enforcement would “release the hounds” on the criminals responsible.
