    Defence looks to hydrogen to fulfil ambitious climate goal

    The Defence Department is trying to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 – 10 years earlier than the national deadline for the same objective – including through investigating the use of hydrogen and alternative liquid fuels, as officials acknowledged climate change was worsening security challenges.

    The incoming government brief prepared for Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed the department would co-operate with the Office of National Intelligence to conduct a risk assessment of the implications of climate change for national security.
