Stormy summer’s toll mounts, in lives and dollars

Days of deadly storms across Australia’s south-east that have flooded farmland, campgrounds and cities and severed roads and services are expected to add billions of dollars to a mounting summer damage bill.
Officials said on Wednesday that nine people had died since Christmas Day as a result of wild weather, including a nine-year-old girl washed away in a stormwater drain in south-east Queensland.
