Origin’s passive power players may hold the balance

Index funds control about 15 per cent of Origin’s register ahead of a make-or-break vote. Their sway blurs the line between active and passive.

The battle for control of Origin Energy is one of the most hotly fought in Australian corporate history.

With shareholders due to vote to approve the scheme of arrangement on Thursday, it is ironic that the balance of power in this highly active contest may be held by so-called passive index funds.
